Frequently Asked Questions About Independent Living
What is the difference between Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Skilled Nursing Care?
Independent Living is for seniors who can live safely without any assistance or supervision. The services provided are primarily for convenience and lifestyle benefits. They also mean no more home maintenance, upkeep or the need for isolation solutions.
Assisted Living is designed for individuals who need regular support but do not need a nurse on a daily basis. Assistance can be provided with activities, such as meals, laundry, bathing, dressing, medication reminders, and transportation to appointments.
Skilled Nursing care provides the necessary care for those who need a nurse or certified nursing assistant on a daily basis. Individuals might have chronic conditions that require a skilled caregiver in our Skilled Nursing care center.
What is a Continuing Care Retirement Community or a Life Plan Community?
Continuing Care or Life Plan refers to the fact that in addition to Independent Living, all levels of care are available to residents on the same campus. This would include Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing, and specialized Memory Care. In addition, all levels of care can be accessed directly by those living outside the retirement community.
Do you have to be a resident of Independent Living first before you can take advantage of Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing or other services?
No. In fact, last year, more than 700 nonresidents recuperated from surgery or benefited from Rebab in our McGaw Care Center. Our Rehabilitation services include physical and occupational therapy, and speech/language pathology.
What if I don’t require assistance, but my spouse needs to be in Assisted Living or Skilled Nursing? Can we still move in? Where would we live?
A number of couples living in Presbyterian Living communities do not share the same good health. On an individual basis, we can create a program that may include one spouse in Assisted Living or Skilled Nursing, and the other in a nearby apartment.
What is a Senior Independent Living entrance fee?
It’s an up-front sum to help cover community operating expenses and help us offer access to continuing care for life at predictable rates. It also ensures priority access to higher levels of healthcare and support with activities of daily living (ADLs) in case you ever need it. Your entrance fee is based on the size of the residence you choose and the number of occupants.
What’s included in the monthly fee?
The Independent Living monthly service fees vary based on the size of your residence and the number of occupants. This comprehensive fee covers a variety of services and amenities, including your meal plan, maintenance, housekeeping, utilities, scheduled transportation, concierge services, fitness center, programs and events, and much more.
How much does it cost to live at Presbyterian Living?
It’s surprisingly affordable. Each Independent Living community has its own selection of residences with corresponding prices. Independent Living floor plans ranging from 500 sq. ft. to over 4,000 sq. ft.
Each community offers both refundable and nonrefundable entrance fee options, combined with an ongoing monthly service fee. More specific information about each campus is part of the Guide to Costs and Benefits.
Is there a rental senior living option?
Some Presbyterian Living retirement communities offer an Independent Living rental option for select apartments. In addition, those who move directly into Assisted Living or Skilled Nursing can rent from month to month and do not pay an entrance fee.
Are meals included?
Our communities offer flexible dining options. Three meals are available each day; however, most residents will still cook many of their meals in their beautiful kitchens. Each resident is provided a monthly discretionary dollar allowance to spend as they choose for dining, salon services, or in our on-site stores.
