Born, raised, and educated in Ohio, he taught elementary school in that Scholarship state before doing the same in Wisconsin. He eventually landed in Deerfield, Illinois, Committee Memberwhere, in a 30-year career, he served as a classroom teacher, reading consultant,assistant superintendent for learning, and chief education officer for the Illinois State Board of Education.With that background, its no surprise that Mike became involved in the MaryBarrow New Hope Scholarship Committee shortly after moving to Lake Forest Place in 2021. He currently chairs that committee while simultaneously leadingthe Employee Appreciation Committeea testament to his gratitude for eachemployee at the community. Working with New Hope scholars is an extension of being a lifelong educator. Its simply another facet of what Ive been called to do, Mike explains. Mike loves it when employees proudly share a diploma or citizenship certificate earned with the support of a scholarship. One employee even stopped Mike to Facetime his daughter, who wanted to thank Mike for helping her father continue his education. While Mike is certainly having an impact on his community, the reverse is also true as he explains, My off-campus friends dont believe me when I say living at Lake Forest Place is like having a second family.
